Wormsloe Historic Site opening hours

Opening Hours
Wormsloe opens at 9 a.m. and closes at 4.45 p.m., every day of the year except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Those are the hours Georgia State Parks publishes, and they were current at the time of writing. What the printed times do not tell you is that the closing hour is the hour you must be out by, not the hour you can arrive: a typical visit runs one to two hours and a thorough one runs longer, so anything after about half past three is a rushed version of this place. The other timing that matters has nothing to do with the gate. By half past twelve on a weekend the avenue is busy, and at 10 a.m. it is not.

Why the closing time bites harder than it looks

4.45 in the afternoon is early for a site that people treat as a spontaneous stop. Savannah visitors finish lunch downtown, decide to drive out, and arrive at four with the avenue, the ruins, the museum and the trails ahead of them and forty-five minutes to do it in. I would rather someone came back the next morning than did that. Work backwards from the closing time: the drive from downtown takes fifteen to twenty minutes, and a fair visit needs one to two hours — how long to spend.

The two days it is shut

Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, and that is the list. Everything else, including the days either side of both, is a normal open day as far as the published hours go. Hours and closures can be revised, though, so the Georgia State Parks listing is the thing to check the morning you go rather than anything printed here.

What time to actually arrive

At opening, and the reason is not the gate. One careful account of a Saturday visit describes arriving at 10 a.m. and finding the site quiet enough that 95 per cent of the photographs had nobody in the background, then finding it packed by half past twelve. That is a two-and-a-half hour swing between an empty avenue and a busy one, and it is the single most useful piece of timing advice about this place: the best time to visit.

What works

  • Open every day of the year bar two, so no weekday closure to plan around
  • The same hours all week, which makes planning simple
  • A 9 a.m. opening lines up neatly with the quietest hour on site
  • Closing at 4:45 leaves the evening free for downtown Savannah

Worth knowing

  • The gate shuts at 4:45, which is early for an afternoon impulse trip
  • Arriving after about 3 p.m. means rushing the ruins or skipping the trails
  • Closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day
  • Published hours can change, so any printed time needs confirming
Insider tip

Aim to be through the gate by nine or shortly after. You get the avenue clear, the light low through the moss and the museum to yourself, and you will still be back downtown for lunch.

The guided version of the morning

If you would rather not watch the clock, the six-hour trip from Savannah that includes Wormsloe and Bonaventure Cemetery, from $59 and rated 4.8 across 285 reviews, runs to its own schedule with transport from the city. It is the only bookable tour on this site that goes inside the gate: what that tour covers.

Frequently asked questions

What are the opening hours of Wormsloe Historic Site?

9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. daily, closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, according to Georgia State Parks at the time of writing. Confirm on the state park site before you drive out.

What time should I arrive?

At opening if you can. The site is quiet at 10 a.m. and packed by 12:30 p.m. on a weekend, and the difference is dramatic — the timing in detail.

Is there a last entry time?

The gate closes at 4:45 p.m. and that is when you need to be leaving, not arriving. Since a typical visit is one to two hours, arriving after about 3 p.m. means cutting something — how long you need.

Is Wormsloe open on holidays?

It is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Getting there takes fifteen to twenty minutes from downtown — how to get there.
